Upgrades

Stay current with expert-managed ProLaw® upgrades.

Upgrading ProLaw® is a critical process that demands careful planning and execution. We handle the entire upgrade from start to finish — so your firm stays current with minimal disruption.

Why staying current matters

Running an outdated version of ProLaw® exposes your firm to security vulnerabilities, compatibility issues, and missed functionality. Each new release brings important fixes, performance improvements, and features that can make your team more productive.

Beyond the technical benefits, staying current ensures you continue to receive support from Elite and keeps your environment compatible with newer versions of Windows, SQL Server, and other components in your technology stack.

Our proven upgrade process

Every ProLaw® upgrade starts with a thorough pre-upgrade assessment. We review your current environment — database health, customizations, third-party integrations, and server configurations — to identify potential issues before they become problems.

We then execute the upgrade in a test environment and hand it off to your team for functional testing — typically about a month for your firm to verify everything works the way it should. Once your team signs off, we perform the production upgrade. The upgrade itself usually takes between four and eight hours, and we typically schedule it after hours so your team experiences no disruption — though we can perform it during business hours if your firm prefers. The whole process from kickoff to completion usually takes about two months.

After the upgrade

Our involvement doesn't end when the upgrade is complete. We stay available to address any post-upgrade questions and help your team get comfortable with any changes in the new version.

Frequently asked questions

How often should we upgrade ProLaw®?
We recommend upgrading at least once a year to stay within the vendor's supported versions and benefit from security patches and new features. Some firms upgrade more frequently depending on their needs.
What happens to our data during a ProLaw® upgrade?
We perform full backups before any upgrade and execute the upgrade in a test environment first. Your team then has about a month to verify everything works correctly before we touch the production system.
How long does a ProLaw® upgrade take?
The upgrade itself typically takes between four and eight hours, though this can vary depending on your environment and version gap. The overall process — from initial assessment through production cutover — usually takes about two months, which includes roughly a month of testing by your firm.
Will our custom reports still work after an upgrade?
We review all custom reports and integrations as part of the pre-upgrade assessment. If any modifications are needed for compatibility with the new version, we handle those as part of the upgrade project.
Do we need to schedule downtime for a ProLaw® upgrade?
Yes, production upgrades require a maintenance window during which users cannot access ProLaw®. We typically perform upgrades after hours so there is no disruption to your team, though we can schedule during business hours if your firm prefers.
