Troubleshooting ProLaw: Clearing User Settings for a Fresh Start

ProLaw, like any robust software, relies on user preferences to deliver a personalized experience. These preferences, encompassing UI layouts, search grid configurations, and dashboard arrangements, are stored in the UserPrefs table, linked to each user’s profile in the Professionals table.

However, sometimes these settings can become corrupted, leading to frustrating issues like:

  • Empty search results: Searches return nothing, even with valid criteria.
  • Document assembly errors: Documents fail to generate correctly.
  • Off-screen windows: UI windows appear outside the visible monitor area.
  • Printing problems: Reports don’t render as expected when printed.

When these problems arise, a common solution is to clear the user settings, effectively resetting them to their default state. This process eliminates any corrupted data and provides a clean slate.

Important Considerations Before Proceeding:

Before you clear user settings, it’s crucial to understand the implications:

  • Dashboard reset: All dashboard widgets will revert to their default configuration.
  • Module preference reset: Search and individual preferences for all modules will be lost.
  • Recent search and autocomplete removal: Recent searches and autocomplete suggestions from queries will be cleared.
  • Saved queries remain intact: Your saved queries will not be affected.

How to Clear ProLaw User Settings for a Specific Professional:

Follow these steps to safely clear a user’s ProLaw settings:

  1. Ensure ProLaw is closed: Ask the professional experiencing the issue to completely exit ProLaw.
  2. Access Professional Setup: Another ProLaw user must navigate to the Professional Setup. This can be done in two ways:
    • From the dashboard, go to Tools > Setup > Professionals.
    • Right-click on the word “ProLaw” in the toolbar and select Setup.
  3. Select the affected professional: Choose the professional whose user settings need to be cleared from the list.
  4. Clear user settings: Click Actions > Clear User Settings.
  5. Confirm the action: Click Yes in the confirmation window. A message “Setting cleared” will appear at the bottom left of the Professional record.
  6. Restart ProLaw: Instruct the professional whose settings were cleared to restart ProLaw and attempt to replicate the original problem.

By following these steps, you can effectively clear corrupted user settings and resolve many common ProLaw issues. Remember to communicate clearly with the affected user about the implications of resetting their preferences.
