Transferring Fees Between Professionals

Problem: One attorney received fee credit in error. The client has paid the bill, but analysis reports need to reflect a different professional.

  1. Enter a negative fee: Unit 1, Professional = source attorney, Component = Flat Fee, Price = negative amount.
  2. Put all WIP transactions on hold, except the fee you just added.
  3. Bill the negative fee.
  4. Enter a positive fee for the attorney receiving the credit: Unit 1, Component = Flat Fee, Price = positive amount, Professional = destination attorney.
  5. Bill the positive fee.
  6. Remove hold from all WIP transactions.
  7. Post a $0 application entry in Journals: In Quick Find, select the Operating checking account and the transfer date, type deposits. Create a new deposit with $0 debit and $0 credit. On the distribution tab, enter the negative amount next to the negative statement and the positive amount next to the positive statement. Remaining box = zero. Press Save.

Transferring Fees Between Matters

Problem: The wrong matter was selected for a deposit after the client paid.

Follow the same steps as above, but instead of changing the professional, change the matter. Use positive and negative fees to move A/R from one matter to another, then post a $0 application entry connecting the two bills.

Transferring A/R Fees to Costs

Problem: All A/R is converted as fees but should be costs.

  1. Enter a negative fee: Component = Converted WIP Fee, Price = negative amount.
  2. Put all WIP on hold, except the negative fee. Bill it.
  3. Enter a positive soft cost: Component = Converted Soft Cost, Price = positive amount. Bill it.
  4. Remove hold. Post a $0 application entry connecting the two bills.
